Hosting FAQ – cPanel

Common Account Questions

Logging into cPanel

How to log into cPanel

Please watch our movie tutorial on how to login to cPanel.

Please note that you only get one login per cPanel. If you create addon, parked and subdomains, then those domains do not have a separate cPanel nor a separate login. Hint: To login to the cPanel for your addon domain, just login to your main cPanel. It is all managed under one control panel.

If your domain name is already pointing to Clearlight, then you can use the domain name to log into cPanel. Here is an example:

http://www.yourdomainname.com/cpanel

or

http://cpanel.yourdomainname.com/

The username and password can be found in your welcome email. If you do not have the correct login, please contact Clearlight via phone, live chat, or email sales for help.

If you recently purchased a new account with Clearlight, you should type the following information into the address bar of your browser:

http://YourSitesIPAddress/cpanel (Example: http://1.2.3.4/cpanel)

Setting up an addon domain

How do I create and remove an Addon Domain?

Please watch our movie tutorial on Setting up an Addon domain

You will not be able to create an Addon Domains in your cPanels unless your hosting account package allows (Pro- unlimited, Basic/Business $2/mo). Please contact us to order Addon Domains for your account.

Note: You may not be able to create an Addon Domain if you do not own the domain name, or if your DNS hasn’t propagated yet.

With Addon Domains you can host multiple different domains with different website content, all under the same disk space and bandwidth of one cPanel. To create a second domain name with its own website, please do the following:

Login to your cPanel and click Addon Domains, under Domains. There are three fields cPanel asks for when creating an Addon Domain.

  • New Domain Name: Enter the new domainname.com, but do not put http or www in the name.
  • Username/directory/subdomain Name: This will be the folder cPanel creates in your public_html folder. Normally, you want to ensure the name you provide doesn’t already exist as a folder in public_html, but cPanel will automatically suggest the name and we recommend you stick with the suggestion.
  • Password: Fill in any password you want here. This password is used for an FTP account which is automatically created by cPanel. You likely will not ever need this password, so we suggest picking a random password and forgetting about it.

Your new domain is now successfully added. You can upload the website files to the specific addon folder which was created in the public_html folder.

How to remove an Addon Domain.

If you have an Addon Domain set up and would like delete it, please do the following:

  • Login to your cPanel and click Addon Domains.
  • At the bottom, under Actions, click Remove.

Changing your cPanel password

How to change the password of your cPanel account
Please watch our movie tutorial on Changing your cPanel password

Don’t give hackers the chance to guess your password. Use the Password Generator to create a strong password, write it down on paper, and copy and paste it into (and from) a computer text file for easy access. If you are the only person using your computer then let your web browser or FTP program remember it for you.

There may be times where you would like to change the password of your account. It is recommended to change your password at least once a month. It is also recommended to have the password be alpha numeric so it is difficult to guess.

The steps to change your cPanel password are as follows:

  • Login to the cPanel
  • Click Change Password
  • In the box to the right of Old Password, provide your old password.
  • In the box to right of New Password, provide the new password. This password should contain uppercase and lowercase letters, as well as numbers and non-numeric symbols. (example. aB3#$f^&G*1)
  • In the box to the right of New Password (again), provide the password once again for verification.
  • Click the Change your password button.

You have now just changed your password. Before you proceed, you will be prompted to log back into cPanel.

Creating a subdomain

How do I create a subdomain?

Please watch our movie tutorial on Creating a subdomain

A subdomain is a second website, with its own unique content, but there is no new domain name. Instead, you use an existing domain name and change the www to another name. The subdomain name looks like forums.domain.com, help.domain.com, help2.domain.com (assuming you already host domain.com).

When you create a subdomain in cPanel, you will be asked to choose the name of the subdomain, the domain the subdomain is for and the location from which the new subdomain will load it’s content.

Note: Some subdomain names are reserved: mail, www, ftp, cpanel, whm, webmail, webdisk. You can use any name except these.

  • Log into cPanel and click on the “Subdomains” icon.
  • In the “Subdomain” field, please select the name of the subdomain which you wish to use, for example, you might choose “blog”. If you choose blog, then your subdomain will look like “blog.example.com”.
  • Next, select the desired domain you wish to create this subdomain for from the drop down menu to the right of the “Subdomain” field. You may create a subdomain for any addon, parked or subdomain that already exists in your cPanel.
  • When you click on the “Document Root” field, it should automatically populate with a cPanel suggested location from which the subdomain will load it’s content. For instance, if you chose “blog” as your new subdomain, then the “Document Root” field will populate with “/public_html/blog”. This means that the new subdomain will load it’s content from the folder named “blog” from within the “public_html” directory.
  • Once all three fields are set the way you prefer, simply click on the “Create” button to complete the creation of your new subdomain.

Note: The temporary URL for an addon or subdomain is

http://ipaddress/~username/subfolder/ or http://servername/~username/subfolder/

where the username is your cPanel user name for your primary domain.

Examples

http://sub.yourdomain.com/~username/addon.com/

http://sub.yourdomain.com/~username/subdomain/

If you have addon or parked domains that you wish to have the same subdomain name for, but wish for those subdomains to load different content, then you must pay close attention to the “Document Root” field. For example, if you own several domains and wish to have a different blog set up for each domain that loads from the subdomain name blog, then you will have change the “Document Root” of each domain that you set up. This is very important because if you create blog.hostgator.com and blog.seohosting.com on the same cPanel, but leave the “Document Root” as the cPanel suggested location, then both of your blog subdomains will load from the same directory of “/public_html/blog” and you will not have separate content for each subdomain.

To avoid experiencing this issue, when you create your new subdomain, make sure you set the “Document Root” to something other than “/public_html/blog”, instead, set it to something like “/public_html/blog1″. If you have done this correctly, then you will have more than one domain using “blog” as a subdomain, but both subdomains will be loading separate content.

Backing up and restoring your website

How to generate/download a full backup

Please watch our movie tutorial on Backing up and restoring your website

A full backup is a backup of all of your files, e-mail, databases, etc. To run a full backup, you can not download the full backup right away. Accessing your website statistics

How to view website statistics in cPanel using AWStats

Please watch our movie tutorial on Accessing your website statistics via Webalizer

When you have a website online, you may want to check on how many people are coming to your website. cPanel has several built in statistic reports.

Please note: The stats may not begin working and updating during the first 24 hours.

The favored program is AWStats. This program updates every 24 hours, and also instantly updates when you click the “Update now” link. The statistics report gives details about the amount of people coming to your website, and other information like:

  • Monthly history
  • Days of month
  • Days of week
  • Hours
  • Countries (Top 25)
  • Hosts (Top 25)
  • Authenticated users (Top 10)
  • Robots/Spiders visitors (Top 25)
  • Visits duration
  • Files type
  • Pages-URL (Top 25)
  • Operating Systems (Top 10)
  • Browsers (Top 10)
  • Connect to site from

Allowing remote MySQL connections

How to connect to the MySQL database

Please watch our movie tutorial on Allowing remote MySQL connections

Configuration Settings:

Host = localhost (really, put localhost)

Database name = (cpanelusername_databasename)

Database username = (cpanelusername_databaseusername)

Database password = (******)

Note: When you move databases to our servers, the database name and username may change. This change must be updated in your script code. (The database name and username is clearly displayed in cPanel, in the MySQL area.)

The database user name cannot be changed to something without the cPanel user name in it.

It is possible for someone to use their cPanel username and password to connect to the database. However, we NEVER recommend doing this because the first time you change or reset your cPanel password, then your databases will stop working.

How to connect to the MySQL server remotely

Note: If connecting from your home computer, you need a MySQL client like Navicat, phpMyAdmin, or Dreamweaver.

Configuration Settings:

Host = (use the server IP address)

Database name = (cpanelusername_databasename)

Database username = (cpanelusername_databaseuser)

Database password = (******)

MySQL Connection Port = 3306

TCP or UDP, either is fine.

Before you can connect to MySQL from another computer, you must enable your computer as an Access Host. It may sound confusing, but cPanel makes this very simple.

  • When using X3, login to cPanel and click the Remote MySQL icon, under Databases.
  • Type in the connecting IP address, and click the Add Host button.
  • All done, try connecting remotely.

-or-

  • When using X, login to cPanel and click the MySQL Databases icon, under Databases.
  • Scroll all the way to the bottom and type in the connecting IP address where it says “Host (% wildcard is allowed):”, and click the Add Host button.
  • All done, try connecting remotely.

Wait a minute, my IP constantly changes.

Okay, you have a dynamic IP address. Therefore, every time you go online, or every once in awhile, your IP changes. You have a few options here. The most secure, would be to update your IP in Remote MySQL every time your IP changes. However, you do have other options available. You could simply enter % (a percentage sign) in the Add Access Hosts text field. This will allow any IP to remotely connect to your databases. Another option: Lets say the first two parts of your IP never change. Then, you could enter 93.138.%.% , where the first two parts are your actual IP address numbers.

IMPORTANT UPDATE ! Since the 11.25 update, we’ve noticed a bug where you add an IP to the MySQL remote access list, only to find that the corresponding MySQL user that is created does not have any privileges.

In order to get the correct privileges added, you must go back to your MySQL Databases section in cPanel and re-add the user to each database (reassign the privileges). No need to remove the user first; just select the user and the database from the drop-downs and click “Add”.

We’ve notified cPanel about the issue.

Changing your MX, CNAME, and A records

How to change DNS zones (MX, CNAME, and A records)

Please watch our movie tutorial on Changing your MX record

With cPanel 11.25, you now have access to make some of these changes.

  • In cPanel, you have an icon under “Domains” called “Simple DNS Zone Editor”. This feature allows you to create and edit A and CNAME records.
  • You can also create and edit your MX records with the icon under “Mail” called “MX Entry”. Here are the rules for Local, Backup, and Remote.
  • If you want HostGator’s help with making these changes, then please contact HostGator via phone, live chat, or email support@hostgator.com with your account details, and be prepared to verify your identity for the protection of your account.
  • Note that cPanel refuses to display any record with a comment at the end. It tells the user that there are no MX records and it is defaulting to the main A record, but this is not true. It is legitimate to have comments at the end of your records, but cPanel will not understand.

Important

1. You must always make your DNS zone changes where your name servers point.

2. DNS zone changes are not instant; they do require time for propagation. Most records need 0-4 hours, but name server records need 0-24 hours.

3. It is important to check the NS records and make sure they match exactly the nameservers you are using at your domain registrar (also known as “fixing the glue”). If they are not an exact match, your website may experience intermittent downtime.

Here is some information to help you understand DNS zones.
Your name servers’ job is to find the server and correct DNS zone in order to get the following information.
The NS records in the DNS zone must match the nameservers you are using.
The A record points your domain to an ip address. (e.g. mydomain.com -> ip address)
The CNAME record points your subdomain to another domain name, like www and mail. (e.g. www.domain.com -> domain.com)
The MX records control where your emails are received. If you want your mail hosted on another server, then this is what you will need to change. (e.g. domain.com -> server)

Creating a MySQL database

How do I create a MySQL database, a user, and then delete if needed?

Please watch our movie tutorial on Creating a MySQL database

Without FrontPage Extensions:

* Publish Destination = ftp://(ftp.domain.tld) or ftp://(ip.ad.dre.ss)

User/Author name = (cPanel user name)

Password = (cPanel Password)

The same settings work for addon and subdomains.

Note: Installing FrontPage extensions can erase everything in your .htaccess files.

FrontPage keeps publishing to a folder inside public_html

On your home PC, you need to save these files in the MySite folder (with the globe icon on the folder). Then attempt to publish as normal.

Managing a MySQL database with phpMyAdmin

phpMyAdmin

Please watch our movie tutorial on Managing a MySQL database with phpMyAdmin

phpMyAdmin is a tool written in PHP to handle the administration of MySQL over the web. Databases must be created in cPanel, but phpMyAdmin can drop databases, create/drop/alter tables, delete/edit/add fields, execute any SQL statement, manage keys on fields, and export data into various formats.

We do not offer support for using phpMyAdmin. You can find support at phpmyadmin.net.

Note: PHPMyAdmin won’t allow you to create databases directly on it. You can only create MySQL Databases in cPanel.

Note: You can only access phpMyAdmin from within cPanel.

Common Errors:

When you try to enter your phpMyAdmin (cPanel -> MySQL -> phpMyAdmin) you might be greeted by this error:

#2002 – The server is not responding (or the local MySQL server’s socket is not correctly configured)

Please contact us via phone or email so we can restart MySQL.

======

If you are seeing an error saying No Privileges.

This is not an error. You cannot create databases in phpMyAdmin. To create a database you must go to cPanel > MySqL Databases and use the Create Database button.

======

Tables missing. No tables found in the database!

Simply refresh the screen. Alternatively, click the Structure tab at the top, and then when you see your table name, click the first icon under Action (the Browse button).

Managing raw access logs

Raw Access Logs

Please watch our movie tutorial on Managing raw access logs

Raw Access Logs allow you to see who has accessed your site without the use of graphs, charts or other graphics. You can use the Raw Access Logs menu to download a zipped version of the server’s access log for your site. This can be very useful when you need to see who is accessing your site quickly.

This is also very useful when you need someone to look at your web statistics, but you do not want to give that person your cPanel login.

  • Login to cPanel and click the Raw Access Logs icon.
  • Click the name of the domain or subdomain you wish to view. (If you want to see the stats for an addon domain, just click the corresponding subdomain name.)
  • Click on Save to save the log to the directory shown by your browser’s save file window.
  • Extract the downloaded file with WinZip (or another program which extracts .gz files).
  • To view the log, open it with MS Word or WordPad (or any text reader which can interpret line breaks).

The raw logs can also be opened with a web statistics program of your choice (like WebLog Expert). The program will add graphics, charts, and other features.

Archived Raw Logs

Currently there are no archived log files. Do not worry about this message. This simply means that cPanel has not archived (backed up) any of your raw access logs.

You can enable this at the top. Go to Configure Logs: and check the box next to “Archive Logs in your home directory at the end of each stats run[ [every 24 hour(s)~]] .”

Parking a domain

What is a parked domain? How do I create and delete one?

Please watch our movie tutorial on Parking a domain

Parked domains are additional domains which you host on your account. They will display the same website as your primary domain and do NOT have separate web statistics, but you can give the parked domain its own email boxes. Parked domains are often used by businesses that want to have more than one web address for advertising purposes.

For example, if you own mysite1.com and it is the primary domain of your cPanel account, you can set up mysite2.com as a parked domain and it will load the content of mysite1.com. You will notice that although the content of mysite2.com is loading in the browser, the address bar will display http://mysite1.com/.

To add a parked domain, please do the following:

  • Login to cPanel and click the Parked Domains icon.
  • In the box to the right of New Domain Name, provide the domain name for which you would like to park on top of your primary domain.
  • Click Add Domain.

You have just added a Parked Domain.

To remove a parked domain, please do the following:

  • Login to cPanel and click Parked Domains.
  • At the bottom, under Actions, click Remove.

Domains must be registered with a valid registrar before they can be parked. In addition, they will not be functional unless they are configured to point to the same name servers as your primary domain.

Password-protecting a directory

To password protect directory:

Please watch our movie tutorial on Password-protecting a directory

Note: At this time, cPanel can only protect directories, not individual files. Any file that needs protection can be placed in a protected directory.

  • Login into your cPanel and click on the Password Protect Directories icon, found under Security.
  • Choose Web Root (and you may need to select Show Hidden Files)
  • Click on the name of the directory that you wish to password protect.
  • Check the box for “Password protect this directory:”
  • Fill in “Name the protected directory”. Actually, this is just the message that will show to visitors when they try to login, and can be anything you like.
  • Click on Save button below.
  • Click “Go Back”
  • Fill in a Username and Password at the bottom of the page, and click “Add/modify authorized user”.
  • You are Done. The directory you selected is now protected by password.

Warning! This password has a maximum of 8 characters. Any characters typed beyond the first 8 will not be required by visitors.

To ensure you directory has been password protected, launch you browser and visit the folder. If the browser prompts you to login, then your directory has been password protected.

500 error after login?

Check the folder ownership on the .htpasswds folder (above public_html). Change them from user.user to user.nobody and ensure the permissions are set to 750 and then refresh your protected page. The error will be gone.

Setting up a cron job

  • In the input box to the right of “Command”, type the name of the file type, then add a space and provide the path to the file which you would like the command to run.
  • Click the “Add New Cron Job” button.

You have just created a cron job to execute a file at a certain time and date with the desired repetition.

Cron jobs are easy to edit and delete.

  • Click on the “Cron Jobs” icon inside cPanel.
  • Scroll down to the last section called “Current Cron Jobs”.
  • Find the correct cron job and click either “Edit” or “Delete”, under Actions.
  • Editing does not have the nice automated tools, so it may be easier to copy the Command, delete the cron job, and recreate it.

Using hotlink protection

What is hot linking? How do I enable and disable hotlink protection?

Please watch our movie tutorial on Using hotlink protection

Hot link protection prevents other websites from directly linking to files and pictures on your website. Other sites will only be able to link to file types that you don’t specify.

An example of hot linking. Say I like the image on your website, and I want that image on my site. If I use the full URL of your image on my site, then the image is downloading from your site every time someone looks at my site. This means I am using your bandwidth for the image. When you enable Hot Link Protection, then I cannot steal your bandwidth anymore.

To enable / disable hot link protection, please do the following:

  • Login to cPanel and click HotLink Protection.
  • Make sure the domain name you wish to protect is in the box called “URLs to allow access”.
  • In the box called “Block direct access for these extensions”, provide the extensions for which you would like to block.
  • We suggest you check the box for “Allow direct requests”.
  • Skip the “Redirect request to this URL” box and hit Submit.

You have now protected your images from being hot-linked. Just be sure that all of your additional domains are in the Hot Link list.

Note: Some firewalls (such as Symantec’s Norton Internet Security™ and ZoneAlarm™) will block a special referrer variable in order to add more privacy for the user. HotLink protection works with this variable to tell where the request is coming from. As such, HotLink isn’t the best solution to avoid bandwidth theft as it will eventually block legitimate requests from visitors using one of those firewalls. Unfortunately this issue is not under our control and there’s nothing we can do to prevent it from blocking legitimate visitors. Use it at your own risk.

Using the index manager

Index Manager

Please watch our movie tutorial on Using the index manager

Go to cPanel and click Index Manager. Click on a folder icon to look inside. Click on a folder name to change it.

The index manager can stop people from seeing a list of all your files in a folder (the “Index of/” page that appears when you do not have an index.html file.)
