Sir Richard Francis Burton

Explorer, Orientalist and Scholar, Burton’s written legacy is wide-ranging and polymathic. Best known for his translation of The Arabian Nights, he also translated scores of other treatises and documents. Among his own works are First Footsteps in East Africa, Pilgrimages to El-Medinah and Mecca, and Lake Regions of Central Africa. In addition to his literary output, Burton was a diplomat, a linguist and an expert swordsman.
