Doris Lessing

BORN IN PERSIA in 1919, Doris Lessing was brought up in Rhodesia, before moving to Britain in 1949. Her initial novel, The Grass is Singing, about a Rhodesian farmer, his wife and their African servant, was the first of a vast body of work, much of it concerned with characters undergoing the political and social upheavals of the 20th century.
