I recently was asked the question....Why is there an image of a fish in the word for cocoa or chocolate?

The language of the maya was created over time from the verbal to the written as in all languages. The written language as well evolved over the centuries of Maya rule. The word for fish is "ka"......I presume the word for fish occurred in the verbal form very early on. As the Maya written language evolved over the centuries, other glyphs as well were used for the "ka" sound.

At any rate when written language was invented by the maya....early on pictographs were used for the words therefore a drawing of a fish was used for the word "ka.... or fish". Other glyphs as well could be used to represent the "ka" sound.

It's interesting that our word for cocoa apparently came directly from the maya word "kakaw"...as cocoa is indigenous of the "new world" and brought to Europe by the early spanish explorers..

As writing evolved pictographs weren't suitable for many sounds and other more abstract symbols took their place of sounds just as we use letters (symbols) for sounds rather than pictographs....the maya created their own set of symbols or glyphs to represent sounds. Just as any language that is in use is in a dynamic state, the verbal and written language of the Maya changed over the centuries of the Classic Maya era. There are often therefore many depictions of written language that differ from place to place and time to time.

Example of a "framed" glyph available as a pin. Your choice of glyph could be presented in this manner. This framed glyph is the number one...It is silver and copper.
Zotz - The bat glyph. There are many depictions of the bat glyph. This is one of my favorites.

The Birth Glyph
I can engrave the name of the newborn or the birthday person on the backside of the glyph.

The name glyphs of newborn follow the birth glyph. This glyph on the left is known as the upended frog. A frog head facing upward. While a frog may or may not have been what the maya meant to represent, frogs are unique in that a human can witness the development of the frog from fertile egg to adult in a short period of time and is often used as a symbol for fertility and birth in many cultures. I can engrave the name and birthdate of newborn on the reverse of this glyph. A parent can wear this glyph while saving it for the child. I found this glyph in a decipherment reading by Linda Schele, UT Austin of Stelae 3 from Piedras Negras. ($42)(bottom left)...with copper background as shown on the right..There is a silver disc soldered to the backside where I engrave the info...($58) plus postage....

U Kab Panamil (Touch the Earth) also represent "to be born" and can be used as well to represent birth. In sterling silver $45...each available in gold.

The Maya Universe

#7 Heaven - #9 Earth - #13 Underworld

Each of these head profiles represent specific maya numerals, head variants of the maya numerals. There are 20 unique profiles for each number between 0 - 19. The numbers #9 representing the heavens, #7 the earth and # 13 the underworld, together they are The Maya Universe. These head profiles representing the heavens, earth and the underworld on a leather cord for $105 plus postage/insurance.

This was an interesting custom order for a maya link belt made in the Taos style. It includes the 20 (head variant) number glyphs below in addition to the two glyph sets representing a birthdate. All in sterling silver.

Head variants of the Maya Numerals

The head variants of the maya numerals© (0-19) Each of these maya head profiles represent a specific number from 0 - 19. They are used by the maya to record time intervals on the long count calendar which is their record of the total number of days since the beginning of the maya calendar in 3114 BC.
This is a 20 base system. These head numerals are found on the stelae at each of the maya ruins. Each glyph is available on a necklace or tie tack or earrings. I made these from drawings found in Michael Coe's book, Breaking the Maya Code which outlines our understanding of the maya culture and language based on explorations of the Maya in recent history. $42. Postage and insurance in the US. is usually $4.00.

Maya Day Glyphs are available also. There is a 260 day cycle Sacred Calendar made up of 20 day glyphs each numbered between 1-13. I wax carve and cast in sterling silver your sacred calendar day which also is the top glyph represented in the Calendar Round shown above. I engrave your name and other appropriate info on the reverse. $42 Please add postage and taxes where applicable.
